Sequoia National Park in the southern Sierra Nevada holds the largest trees on the planet by volume, including the General Sherman, in the groves of the Giant Forest. We hiked among the big trees with Katia, before the kids.

On the same trip we camped over in the Inyo National Forest, on the eastern side of the range, by a big alpine lake — an easy hike out from the campsite and quiet nights under the pines. (See also our Mineral King backpacking trip in the same park.)

(Pre-digital era — no photos survive. Placed in the summer of 2010, one of the two pre-kids summers with Katia; the exact date wasn't recorded.)
