Rubicon Peak rises to 9,183 feet on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, a steep granite summit with a final rock scramble to the top and a huge view down over the whole lake. We climbed it the whole way from foot to top with Katia, before the kids — up through the forest from the base and out onto the granite for the last scramble to the summit.

Congress designated the surrounding 63,960 acres as Desolation Wilderness in 1969, protecting the glacier-scoured granite country around the peak from further development.
