Redwood National Park on California's far north coast protects the tallest trees on earth — coast redwoods towering nearly 380 feet in fog-fed old-growth groves that run down to a wild Pacific shoreline. We walked the boardwalk loop through an old-growth grove here with Katia, before the kids — the raised planks winding between trunks too wide to get your arms around.

(Pre-digital era — no photos survive. Placed in the summer of 2009, one of the two pre-kids summers with Katia; the exact date wasn't recorded.)

The park was established in 1968 after a 50-year campaign by the Save the Redwoods League. It's home to Hyperion, discovered in 2006 and confirmed as the tallest known living tree on Earth, at over 380 feet.
