Mount Diablo rises 3,849 feet over the East Bay, and on a clear day the summit view is one of the widest in the country — from the Sierra crest to the Farallones, out across the whole Bay Area. We've hiked it as a family more than once, including a winter climb up through fresh snow on the upper trails.
The name traces to 1805, when Spanish soldiers lost track of a Native encampment overnight and blamed "the Devil." English speakers later mistook the Spanish "monte" (thicket) for "mountain," and the name stuck to the peak itself.
