Lassen Volcanic National Park with Katia

Lassen Volcanic National Park protects a landscape of active hydrothermal basins, alpine lakes, and Lassen Peak itself — one of the largest plug-dome volcanoes on earth. We hiked here with Katia among the fumaroles and boiling springs of Bumpass Hell, before the kids.

Lassen Peak's 1915 eruption sent ash more than 30,000 feet into the sky and flattened a swath of forest still called the "Devastated Area" — the last Cascade Range eruption before Mount St. Helens in 1980.
