Kings Canyon National Park protects one of the deepest canyons in North America — the South Fork of the Kings River has cut a granite gorge more than 8,000 feet from rim to river, deeper than the Grand Canyon. The park pairs that canyon country with the giant sequoia groves up at Grant Grove, where the General Grant Tree stands nearly 270 feet tall.

We hiked one of the canyon-floor trails down at Cedar Grove, along the South Fork of the Kings River under the granite walls, with Katia, before the kids.

(Pre-digital era — no photos survive. Placed in the summer of 2010, one of the two pre-kids summers with Katia; the exact date wasn't recorded.)
