The Heavenly gondola climbs out of South Lake Tahoe to ridgetop trails and overlooks with the whole cobalt sweep of the lake below and the Desolation peaks beyond — a favorite spot to ride up and walk the ridge.
Heavenly opened December 15, 1955, as a modest rope-tow operation on the Bijou hillside — the Washoe and Paiute are said to have called the mountain "heavenly" long before the resort took the name.
