Half Moon Bay strings a run of wide, dune-backed state beaches along the San Mateo coast, linked by the flat Coastside Trail atop the bluffs. Long stretches of open sand make it a favorite spot to let the dog run.
The town began as "Spanishtown," a settlement on Rancho San Benito, a Mexican land grant to Candelario Miramontes. It was renamed Half Moon Bay in 1874 for the crescent shape of the bay itself.
