Guerneville sits on the Russian River in western Sonoma County, in the heart of the redwood country. Nearby Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve and Schoolhouse Canyon hold groves of old-growth coast redwoods above the slow, swimmable river.
The town takes its name from George Guerne, a Swiss immigrant who built a sawmill on the site — then known as "Stumptown" — in 1867; the post office renamed the town for him in 1870.
