El Salvador with Katia in 2008, before the kids — the first leg of one long trip through Latin America that carried on to Peru.
We climbed up to the Boquerón volcano above San Salvador — a green crater a mile across, dropping away below the coffee slopes — and walked the Tazumal ruins, grassy pre-Columbian pyramid platforms set against the tropical highlands.
Boquerón's most recent eruption, in 1917, was preceded by a destructive earthquake and built the small cinder cone — Boqueroncito — still visible on the crater floor today.
