Carmel Valley runs inland from the Monterey coast into dry oak-and-grass hills — hot and golden in summer where the coast is fogged in, with valley oaks standing out across the slopes.
We spent a morning here walking the ranch trails leading pack donkeys, out along the fence lines and up through the oaks with the valley opening below.
Carmel Valley was part of Rancho Los Laureles, a roughly 6,625-acre Mexican land grant issued in 1839 to José Manuel Boronda and Vicente Blas Martínez along the Carmel River — the same ground now known as Carmel Valley Village.
